I admit it, I am completely out of the running bug and desperate to be back in it. My excuse is it’s been cold and I hate running in the cold but I am determined to run again... with you!! All this lack of running made me think (whilst sitting on my lovely comfy couch.)… Have you ever thought to yourself – I want to run? I want to run fast and not get out of puff and just run? It is so funny to think that something like running, you actually have to train yourself in and actually have to work at it to be able to do it!! When you are children you take it for granted that you can run and run and run….. You have so much energy, that running was never an issue.
So many women I speak to say they would like to run but don’t think they can, and that is rubbish!! Anyone can run, it’s just an upgrade from power walking. But I do understand the feeling of the unknown or unsure because as you get older, the thought of running can be nerve racking for people as they feel self-conscious, it can be exhausting just thinking about getting off the couch and going outside!! Also as us women get older our boobs seem to get in the way whilst we run, a constant complaint of the jiggle we don’t want to wiggle. Another common complaint is the out of breath feeling in the chest as people start to run again. These are normal although they might not feel it, but it is your body’s reaction to trying something new.
So what I thought what I would do is take you through from STEP 1 – pre run right through TO BEING ABLE TO DO A 5KM. YOU WITH ME?? So lets take it slow and have our first day as a rest day – ha ha and make sure we have the following before we run. I will post the first step of going outside on Thursday 23rd February and doing the first week’s session.
So what do we need to make sure we have in place for our first run??
· Supported High Impact Sports Bra
· Water – small bottle
· PMA – Positive Mental Attitude
· I POD/ MP3 Player – something to keep your mind occupied
· Running trainers that offer support, go to your local running/ sports shop and ask advice on trainers best suited to a new runner.
· Comfortable clothing that YOU FEEL comfortable in while running. It doesn’t need to be designer, it can be baggy and dis coloured… who cares!! Just get it on if it feels good to wear. I always run best in my joggers with paint on them and my boyfriend’s hoodie!!
· An idea of the route you would like to take.
